Down Syndrome Association of Jacksonville
The Down Syndrome Association of Jacksonville (DSAJ) held its first Buddy Walk in 2003. The event attracted 1,000 walkers and raised over $50,000.
DSAJ raised funds for its Buddy Walk in various ways. The group solicited sponsorship from corporations and advertised for donations in its newsletter. It also requested that Buddy Walk team leaders solicit pledges.
DSAJ Buddy Walk organizers found the several things to be very helpful as they planned for their event. First of all, the group formed different committees early on to handle the various aspects of the walk, such as recreation, concessions, entertainment, marketing, etc. Coordinators set regular committee meetings, and these proved to be very beneficial in terms of completing each task. Secondly, the group planned two nights when team leaders could bring in their pledges so that the group didn't have to collect money on the day of the walk. Lastly, DSAJ had an outside volunteer group handle on-site registration, which allowed the planning committee to share in the event with their families and friends.
