Michelle

Deland, FL

Michelle is a 27 year old woman from Deland, FL. Her mother writes:

As a family, we love to read, shop and go to the beach. I am so proud of Elizabeth's ability to light up a room with her smile; the amount of things she's already accomplished; her ability to love and be everyone’s friend; and the way she's taught so many people about things they never would have learned without her. I'm also proud of the way her and her younger sister, Katelyn, look out for each other – Elizabeth may be the big sister, but she and Katee sometimes switch roles.

My hope for the future is that the public becomes more educated about individuals with Down syndrome, specifically, and people with disabilities in general. There are so many misconceptions and so much ignorance. I want to help change that.

We’ve been participating in the Deland Buddy Walk since it started four years ago. We started out as just walkers, but in recent years, we have also helped to get sponsors and publicize the event. On our second Buddy Walk, we had more than 20 family members and friends participate, some traveling from as far as Georgia and Mississippi to get here. We always have a strong showing, and it’s always a great day each October when our family and friends get together to celebrate Michelle’s uniqueness.
