When the Buddy Walk began in 1995, it was conceived as an advocacy event. In fact, it wasn’t until four years later that a fundraising component was added. Since 1995, the Buddy Walk has grown to be the premier advocacy event for Down syndrome and has become a major platform for inclusion in communities across the country. Given the history and power of the Buddy Walk program, there are countless ways the Buddy Walk can raise public awareness and understanding of Down syndrome locally and nationally and improve the lives of people with Down syndrome and their families.
One way the Buddy Walk can effectively send a strong, positive message to the world about Down syndrome is by the numbers. With almost 300 walks across the country, all walking under the Buddy Walk name and logo, this national alliance and strong brand identity increases visibility for Down syndrome everywhere.
