The 16th Annual New York City Buddy Walk® will take place on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at the Great Hill in Central Park, which is located at 106th Street and Central Park West. More than 2,000 people, including individuals with Down syndrome and their families and friends, will walk a one mile course to promote inclusion and acceptance and raise awareness about the value of people Down syndrome.

Buddy Walk Day Events

 

Times Square Video

Help kick off Down Syndrome Awareness Month on the morning of the New York City Buddy Walk by attending the Times Square Video presentation.  More than 200 photos of individuals with Down syndrome from all over the world will be selected from thousands of photo submissions for the 2010 NDSS Times Square Video.  Click here for more information about photo contest.

 

The Times Square Video will be shown on the MTV plasma screen beginning at 10:15 AM and will be re-played at approximately 10:35 AM.  We will gather to watch the video at the pedestrian mall on Broadway between 44th and 45th Streets.

Bus Transportation to Central Park

At 11:00 NDSS buses will be available to transport everyone from Times Square to the New York City Buddy Walk site at The Great Hill in Central Park. Participants should meet the buses on 43rd Street between 6th Avenue & Broadway.   Participants can also ride a subway or taxi to the Buddy Walk site.

Buses will return participants to Times Square at 2:45 and 3:00 p.m.

Registration

Registration begins at 11:00 AM at The Great Hill in Central Park and will remain open throughout the day.   The entrance to The Great Hill is at 106th Street and Central Park West and is accessible by wheelchair and stroller.   To register on-line for the Buddy Walk, click here.


There will be designated registration areas for Team registration, Pre-registered individuals and On-site registration.  Each participant or a representative from a team will need to check-in in order to receive food and t-shirt coupons.

Opening Ceremony

All New York City Buddy Walk participants will gather around the main stage at 12:00 PM to salute the amazing individuals, teams and sponsors that have raised money and awareness in support of individuals with Down syndrome.

The Buddy Walk

This is what it is all about!  Walk the one mile course in Central Park to celebrate the many abilities and accomplishments of individuals with Down syndrome and promote inclusion and acceptance.  All individuals with Down syndrome and children under 13 will receive a participation medal.

Fun in the Park


Carnival games and food, face painting, Brad Hennefer’s Golf For Life clinic, parachute games with KEEN New York and other activities will be available free of charge.


Visit the Exhibitor’s Marketplace to pick up free samples and to learn more about our sponsors and partners.  Bring along a picnic lunch and find a cozy patch of grass where you and your team can spread out and enjoy the afternoon.


Live entertainment will take place on the main stage all day.  The 2010 featured act is Signing Time with Rachel Coleman.

Buddy Walk Challenge

By taking the Buddy Walk Challenge, a Walker pledges to raise $1,000 or more to support the education, research and advocacy programs of the National Down Syndrome Society.

All Challengers will have their name featured on our web site and in the NDSS e-newsletter as well as on the Challenger Sign at the walk.
